LESTOK'S FULL DAY TOUR

Karijini is WA’s second largest National Park and has spectacular 150-metre sheer-sided ochre coloured chasms. Hidden amongst this ruggedness are clear rock pools, cascading waterfalls and tropical fern environments each offering easy walking track or viewing platform access.

Lestok Tours departs daily from Karijini Eco Retreat (subject to minimum numbers), to travel through the picturesque  Karijini National Park . The Tour explores the Hancock Gorge area commencing with a birds eye view from the heights of Oxers Lookout, a towering but safe precipice overlooking the juncture of Weano, Hancock, Joffre and Red Gorges. The best introductory short walk in the Karijini then commences down into Handrail Pool. The reason it’s called Handrail becomes apparent, as that (and a piece of rope) is what you will be holding on to descend down into the stunning beauty of Handrail Pool. The pool itself is quite large, surrounded by 40-metre red rock walls and a magic swimming spot.

Take time to linger within an environment two and a half billion years in the making. Shafts of light flood the chamber, there is a warm orange glow of the rock walls beyond, the sound of cascading water, smooth marbled surfaces and the pristine emerald green pools. The tour moves on to Joffre Falls , with it’s 100 metre high walls, overhanging trees and crystal clear pools. Pause to take in the highest Lookout in the Karijini at Knox Gorge prior to lunch.

The journey continues into the heart of the Karijini to visit the newly opened Karijini Visitors Interpretative Centre, recent winner of an International innovative building design award. The new Centre has been built in the shape of the Pilbara Bungarra Lizard, and houses a wealth of Aboriginal culture, history, art, fauna and flora information, unique souvenirs, artefacts.

The day concludes with a visit to the Dales Gorge area of Karijini where the landscape is dominated by the awesome beauty of the Fern Pool and Fortescue Falls . After viewing Circular Pool from the lookout above, the tour follows the river course upstream to the Fortescue Falls , cascading year round, down over a broad ochre rock ledge. Huge fig and paperbark trees leading beyond the falls to Fern Pool surround the area. At Fern Pool, you can swim and bath under the endless cascade of water over the 10-metre rock ledge above. Then it’s a short trip back to Karijini Eco Retreat concluding your Karijini adventure in the Pilbara.
